🍂 Autumn in New England – A Photography Adventure to Remember

By Craig Williams

In May 2025, John Armytage and I led a group of passionate photographers through one of Australia’s most picturesque regions — the New England Tablelands of Northern NSW. Over four days, we explored rolling farmland, fiery autumn colours, misty mornings, and cascading waterfalls.

This wasn’t just a photography tour. It was a creative immersion. Each location became a classroom, every moment an opportunity to refine technique and build confidence behind the lens.

🌄 Light, Composition & Storytelling in Every Frame

From the iconic Gostwyck Chapel, shrouded in morning fog, to the rugged cliffs of Wollomombi Gorge, New England provided the perfect canvas for skill-building.

We worked closely with each participant, tailoring guidance to their experience level:

📐 Composition Mastery – Leading lines, layering, and framing for depth and drama.
💡 Exposure & Focus – Mastering light in challenging conditions for crisp, impactful shots.
🌊 Long Exposure Techniques – Slow shutter speeds to create movement and atmosphere.
📖 Creative Storytelling – Turning single frames into compelling visual narratives.

Gostwyck Chapel was a standout location — a heritage stone chapel framed by ancient elms glowing in soft golden light. Here, we explored how subtle shifts in perspective and framing can transform a photo from “nice” to unforgettable.

🌳 Waterfalls, Streetscapes & Rural Charm

New England is a land of contrasts.

🌫 Ebor Falls – Misty mornings invited creative experimentation.
🏞 Hidden Gorges – Rugged terrain challenged participants to capture scale and drama.
🏛 Armidale Streetscapes – Sandstone churches and tree-lined streets in vibrant autumn colour offered lessons in architectural photography.

Evenings were spent reviewing images, learning Lightroom techniques, and sharing stories over fantastic local dining — creating a full-circle photography and lifestyle experience.

🤝 More Than a Workshop – A Shared Creative Journey

What sets these tours apart is the camaraderie. Photographers of all levels connect, collaborate, and leave with not just a portfolio of stunning images but also a renewed sense of inspiration and community.
