Melbourne CBD Street Photography Workshop March 2025
Melbourne Laneways of Melbourne
From March 13th to 16th, photographers joined John Armytage and Craig Williams for a four-day Melbourne CBD Photography Tour and Workshop that blended creativity, culture, and cuisine in one of Australia’s most photogenic cities. Over the course of the workshop, the group explored Melbourne’s vibrant laneways, heritage architecture, bustling markets, and hidden gems, while also enjoying some of the city’s world-class dining experiences.
Street photography was at the heart of this Melbourne workshop. The group captured the raw energy of Queen Victoria Market, where the colours, characters, and atmosphere made for lively compositions. At the State Library of Victoria and Flinders Street Station, participants had the chance to frame historic architecture with a modern twist, experimenting with angles and light that showcased the city’s unique character. Federation Square, Bourke Street Mall, and Collins Street offered opportunities for both candid moments and urban landscapes, while the iconic Hosier Lane and AC/DC Lane delivered the graffiti-covered walls that have become synonymous with Melbourne street photography.
Beyond the iconic, the workshop uncovered lesser-known corners of the CBD, including Melbourne Central, the Crown Casino precinct, and tucked-away laneways that rewarded those with a keen eye for detail. Each location was an open classroom, where John and Craig shared expert tuition on composition, lighting, and creative techniques to help participants elevate their skills — whether they were beginners, seasoned photographers, or simply shooting on a smartphone.
Just as memorable as the photography were the culinary experiences. Melbourne is a city celebrated for its food, and this workshop embraced that fully. Evenings were spent dining at some of the city’s finest restaurants and cafés, where the group shared stories, reflected on the day’s images, and enjoyed the social connection that makes these tours so rewarding. Great food and great photography combined to create a truly immersive experience.
The Melbourne Photography Tour and Workshop proved that the city is not only a playground for street photographers but also a place where creativity, culture, and community come together. With iconic landmarks, colourful laneways, hidden gems, and amazing dining experiences, it was four days that will stay with participants long after the shutters closed.
